When Brad Pitt was awarded best supporting actor at the National Board of Review Awards Gala Wednesday Night, he took some time to speak on his sobriety and thank the person who helped him get to this point.
“Thank you, Bradley,” Pitt said. “I got sober because of this guy, and every day’s been happier ever since. I love you, and thank you.”
Bradley Cooper has been sober since he was 29 years old. Now 45, the actor was worried that alcohol would ruin his life.
“I don’t drink or do drugs anymore,” he said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, “I realized I wasn’t going to live up to my potential, and that scared the hell out of me. I thought, ‘Wow, I’m actually going to ruin my life. I’m really going to ruin it.”
This isn’t the first time that the movie star has opened up about his sobriety. In an interview with Anthony Hopkins, Pitt also spoke about his struggle with alcohol.
“Well, I just saw [alcohol] as a disservice to myself, as an escape,” he said.
Pitt’s decision to get sober came after a problem with his relationship with Angelina Jolie that occurred in 2016. It was reported that they got into an argument about his drinking while aboard a private plane.
“I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges,” Pitt said in a New York Times interview.
After Jolie filed for divorce, Pitt spent a year and a half in Alcoholics Anonymous.
“It was this safe space where there was little judgement, and therefore little judgement of yourself.”
Brad Pitt was given the award for best supporting actor for his role in the 2019 Quentin Tarantino film, “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.”
