Dr. Herbert Kleber, a man who dedicated almost his entire professional life to treating drug addiction is being honored by Google this week. Kleber worked to change the way that we look at and treat addiction.

His work revolutionized the industry and has saved countless lives.

Kleber was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in June of 1934. He attended Dartmouth College and became infatuated with psychology.

However, it wasn’t until he began working at a prison hospital in Lexington, Kentucky that he began to fully realize his calling.

Kleber rejected past approaches to treatment and instead was one of the first to look at addiction as an actual medical condition.

While treating inmates in Kentucky, Kleber focused on a scientific viewpoint to recovery that he coined “evidence-based treatment” which proved to be effective.

According to Columbia University, Kleber’s career “contributed to the emergence of addiction and substance use disorders as a focus of research and treatment by the medical profession.”

Under national policies that he helped implement there was a decrease in damage for illegal drugs through programs in prevention, education, and treatment.

Dr. Kleber work was recognized by many and he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science in 1996.

Kleber passed away on October 15, 2018 but his legacy and work continues to live on within the recovery industry, the evidence of which is seen in the countless number of individuals who have achieved long-term sobriety due to evidence-based therapy.
