Using Marijuana While Pregnant Is More Common Than You Might Think – USA Today

Researchers found that there has been a sharp increase in the number of pregnant women smoking marijuana. This can pose many problems as there is a definite link between marijuana use and preterm birth.

Doctors Are Still Prescribing Opioids to Kids Getting Their Tonsils Out – Mother Jones

A new study found that doctors were still prescribing opioids to 6 in 10 children across the country who were getting their tonsils removed despite the fact that ibuprofen has proven to be just as effective as opioids in treating pain after tonsil removal. Unfortunately, a small percentage of those who are prescribed opioids experience an overdose.

Why More Pharmacies Don’t Stock Buprenorphine – NPR

Buprenorphine is a drug that helps reduce drug cravings and treat symptoms of withdrawal from opioid abuse. When combined with therapy, buprenorphine is one of the three main medicines considered the “gold standard” for opioid-addiction treatment. However, there are a number of barriers to buprenorphine access, including too few medical providers available to write the prescription.

This is one of the causes of the opioid crisis. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that reducing the number of pills prescribed to patients led to no reported drop in patient satisfaction or increase in reported pain.
