Unfortunately, a small percentage of those who are prescribed opioids experience an overdose.
Buprenorphine is a drug that helps reduce drug cravings and treat symptoms of withdrawal from opioid abuse. When combined with therapy, buprenorphine is one of the three main medicines considered the “gold standard” for opioid-addiction treatment. However, there are a number of barriers to buprenorphine access, including too few medical providers available to write the prescription.

When opioids first hit the market, there was little information on how many pain pills patients needed after specific procedures leading to patients being sent home with excessive prescriptions of addictive medication. This is one of the causes of the opioid crisis. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that reducing the number of pills prescribed to patients led to no reported drop in patient satisfaction or increase in reported pain.
In recent weeks, nearly three dozen young people have been hospitalized due to severe respiratory problems after vaping either nicotine or marijuana. The patients were experiencing difficulty breathing while others reported chest pain, vomiting, and other problems. Some patients even had severe lung damage that required weeks of treatment in intensive care units.
