World Mental Health Day 2019

by Landmark Recovery

October 10, 2019

October 10 is World Mental Health Day that is meant to spread awareness and advocacy against the social stigma associated with mental health.

Unfortunately, this stigma causes a lot of problems for people who are seeking help. Some people may entirely avoid talking about problems that they may be dealing with for fear that they will be ostracized or ridiculed.

There are a number of common problems that people with mental illness may be dealing with. Learning more about these problems and what you can do to remedy them is a good way to open communication about these issues and start to address and fight the stigma associated with mental illness.

Depression

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems across the country. An estimated 17.3 million American adults had at least one major depressive episode during their lifetime. Depression is more than just having a bad day. Depression is a serious mental illness that can cause many other problems such as substance abuse and suicidal ideation.

Along with depression, one of the other most common mental health disorders is anxiety.

Anxiety

Occasional anxiety is an expected part of normal life. Most people will feel some form of anxiety at work or during social functions sometimes. However, persistent anxiety is a disorder that can interfere with some people’s normal life.

Generalized anxiety disorder is a display of anxiety or worry most days that last for at least six months. Some of the common symptoms associated with anxiety include restlessness, irritability, muscle tension, fatigue, constant worry, and more.

Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is something that can often get overlooked when talking about mental health, but it is considered a disease and many times, mental health disorders like depression can be a major factor. In fact, these may be the underlying cause of substance abuse in the first place.

Substance abuse is a serious and debilitating problem that can lead to a number of serious consequences including drug and alcohol withdrawals, drug overdose, and even death.

Suicide

Suicide is paramount problem associated with mental health and causes the deaths of thousands of Americans each year. According to the World Health Organization, someone loses their life to suicide around the world every 40 seconds.

To take action, we need to work together to understand what can lead to suicide and how we can help those people. Whether it is reaching out to check on your friend or loved one’s well-being occasionally or seeking professional treatment, there are a number of resources available to help.
